Gardening On My Mind

In 2004, I read in Mother Earth News about growing tomato's inside during the winter.
http://www.motherearthnews.com/Organic-Gardening/2004-10-01/Winter-Tomatoes.aspx
In Nov 04, I cut cuttings off of some vines I had hanging upside down in my garage.
The cuttings had bumps on them which is where the roots sprout from.
I put the cuttings in some water filled mason jars where after some time they grew roots.
Thus sprouted, I put them in 5 gallon buckets of potting soil with plastic trays underneath.
The pictures below shows them on a table. Later I had to move them to the floor.
They grew to the ceiling again.
Some time later in Feb - April I got bowls full of tomatoes.

Later I moved these buckets outside where they continued to produce tomato's until fall of 2005.

Climbing Peas

Below are pole peas that I planted in 2006.
Three 24" metal stakes hold the trellis in place.

They grew this tall, about 7 1/2 feet (see below).
I just stood there reaching in picking peas and there wasn't hardly any bending over.
A trellis or side wall is needed to support them.
These are growing on strings. Click pic to see the pods.

I purchased the peas at Smith's Marketplace in Logan. Buy early as they sell out fast.
I just tried (15Mar09) to buy some from EdHumeSeeds.com but I could not get the order to work.
I want to try these in 5 gallon pails or flower pots this year.
Wind can be an issue. Think ahead on the support system.

Reed, thanks for your informative and delightful blog! I appreciate the idea of growing tomato plants from cuttings. Your success this winter with the cherry tomatoes was fantastic!

Shelley shared some of your garlic with me last fall. Thanks, too, for that. Your gardening, repairing, and outdoor/hunting expertise are inspiring.

Thanks for sharing through your blog. Our greetings to your family!
